Design plays an important part in my life and I’m now seeing that my kids are developing a similar appreciation for design too. Nelson on the Park ( Finally more change to a design being proposed )

A new proposed development for downtown Vancouver’s West End neighbourhood could provide the skyline with a pixelated touch.

A 60-storey residential building, dubbed ‘Nelson on the Park’ by project proponents, is planned for 1075 Nelson Street – just metres away from Nelson Park and a half-block’s distance from First Baptist Church. The proposal lies within the municipal government’s West End Community Plan’s 550 foot height limit, allowing the project to eclipse the height of the nearby One Wall Centre




Few details are known about the project at this time but renderings have been published on the website of the 2015 World Architecture Festival, to be held in Singapore this November. The renderings show a slender, rectangular-shaped tower topped off by a large rooftop pool with a pixelated roof structure that provides an aesthetic transition into the sky.

The tower is designed by Singaporean-born designer Chris Doray, who is based in Vancouver and previously worked with Bing Thom Architects, as well as Vancouver-based Nick Milkovich Architects and IBI Group. The project is being spearheaded by the Wall Financial Corporation.

Jenga tower proposed for downtown Vancouver

A German starchitect based in Beijing and Hong Kong is proposing to build a landmark residential tower on the northern fringes of downtown Vancouver’s West End neighbourhood.

Ole Scheeren’s Jenga-like design with rectangular blocks that protrude out of the upper levels is slated for 1500 West Georgia Street, sharing the site of the Rhone and Iredale-designed triangular office building which will remain. The development would be built on the eastern end of the city block on the corner of the intersection of West Georgia and Nicola streets.

With its iconic design and height of 152 metres (500 feet), if approved it would effectively provide a distinctive new ‘entrance’ into Vancouver from Stanley Park and the North Shore.

“The tower opens up to embrace both city and nature in a three-dimensional sculpture, projecting the space of living outwards into the site’s surroundings, responding to the multi-directional context,” reads the architect’s description of his design. “The resulting multiple terraces generated from these horizontal shifts create both physical and emotional connectivity between the indoor and outdoor environment.”

“The design of the building presents a carefully crafted distinctive silhouette that reaches out to engage the space of the city and stands as a new beacon that activates the skyline.”

1500 West Georgia is local developer Bosa Properties’ most architecturally ambitious project to date. In addition to the unique aesthetic design elements, the 51-storey building will aim for a LEED Platinum certification with green features that include solar panels on the roof to generate power for the building’s lower commercial levels and public amenities.

The new tower will be footed by a plaza and an expanded and improved cascading water feature will replace the existing installation.

There are 235 residential units within the tower, units that will likely become trophy properties in the region’s luxury market. The overall cost of the project could exceed half a billion dollars given the intricate design’s elements and location fronting the Coal Harbour neighbourhood.

Bosa Properties purchased the city block last year with the intent of adding a residential tower to the site.

The height of the proposal follows the constraints of the City’s West End Community Plan and view cone policies, allowing the tower to become the fifth tallest building in the city and the tallest building in the immediate area.

Simply put, I love design. Whether it’s websites, packaging, cool layouts, marketing products, to brands. Design plays an important part in my life and I’m now seeing that my kids are developing a similar appreciation for design too. Innovations in technology are certainly changing the way the real estate industry operates, and I love the challenge of keeping up with all these new concepts. Innovation has created many new ways to conduct business and I find myself always trying to think outside the box! There is just so much change going on in the world and this really inspires me. And as for those changes in todays ever changing marketplace, I’m embracing them full on! I strongly feel that my own industry is upon changing times and I look to be a part of something new and different that adapts to this fresh and evolving consumer marketplace. Maybe this is why I’m so interested in start-up businesses as I believe it’s these people that keep the world fresh and exciting. I’m always fascinated to hear about all these new start-ups that have gone on to become massively successful. From UBER, Netflix to Airbnb it’s enthralling to discover their stories and hear how these budding young people have taken their ideas and made them flourish. I am keenly following this growing culture and hope that, at some point in the future, it is something that I myself – and my children – may get involved in. I also have a passion for technology. No, I’m not one of those guys who must have the latest and greatest gadgets, but I am very interested in learning more about all the new products, ideas and concepts out there, from phones to cars, to everyday things that help to make life easier and cooler.
